National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day

According to the non-profit National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA), fibromyalgia (pronounced fy-bro-my-AL-ja) is a common and complex chronic pain disorder that affects people physically, mentally and socially. It’s characterized by chronic widespread pain, multiple tender points, abnormal pain processing, sleep disturbances, fatigue and often psychological distress. For those with severe symptoms, fibromyalgia can be extremely debilitating and interfere with basic daily activities– like sleeping. You can read more about fibromyalgia through NFA’s website.

I didn’t know what fibromyalgia was before I started working at Select Comfort. But, since the Sleep Number Mattress is great for people dealing with ever-changing aches and pains (you can adjust the firmness on each side—as much or as little as you want – depending on how you feel), I’ve learned about fibromyalgia and have read stories from some of our Sleep Number owners who suffer with the syndrome, including the below. If you’re interested in entering for the chance to win a FREE Sleep Number bed, keep reading to the bottom of this post with details on our current National Fibromyalgia Association sweepstakes.

Jackie B. says…
I have Fibromyalgia, Arthritis and Restless Leg Syndrome, and have never found a comfortable position in any other bed, until now. I can raise my head and legs, and sleep all night on my back. I wake up the next morning rested and ready to take on the world. I don’t know how I ever lived without my Sleep Number bed and adjustable foundation.

Karen C. says…
I have CFS/fibromyalgia. Because of the pain, the only sleeping pill strong enough to get me a good night’s sleep left me too doped-up to do anything productive the whole next day. Then I tried the Sleep Number bed, fully expecting to return it after the 30-day trial period. Within a week, I told the salesman “you’ll get it back when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.” The first night, I slept for 12 hours (after years of sleeping two hours before the pain woke me up). I cannot recommend this bed highly enough! It paid for itself in the first year, because I was able to work that many more hours due to feeling so much better. From here on out, the Sleep Number is pure profit for me and my business.

Dawn K. says…I have had fibromyalgia for over 15 years and have not had a good night’s sleep in all that time. Since I purchased my Sleep Number bed I sleep like a baby! Normally, I couldn’t stay in one position for long. Now when I wake up my bed looks as if no one slept in it because I hardly move all night. I can also sleep on my stomach again. This bed is a miracle in my life.

Fibromyalgia Awareness Day was May 15, 2010, and the NFA is ending this week with a Wellness Fair at Cal State Fullerton in California on Saturday, May 15, 2010. To help make fibromyalgia more visible and show our support, we’ve partnered with the NFA and ONE lucky winner will win a free Queen Sleep Number p5 bed set with UPS shipping. The winner will be announced during this Saturday’s event, but you don’t have to be present to win. Details on how to enter can be found at NFA’s blog or by going to our Facebook page.

Have you ever heard of fibromyalgia or know someone who is dealing with it? If you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, does it hinder your ability to sleep well?

I wish I would have slept on the sleep number bed before we purchased our Seally Posture Pedic because I felt great the whole week I slept on that Sleep Number Bed and the fact that we had our mattress for over 3years and my husband said we paid quite a bit for getting another mattress at this time ,I understand but I never sleep the whole night on this mattress and I am up at least 3 times a night and dread even going to bed because I feel even worse when I wake up in the morning. I just can’t justify paying so much even though I feel as though the Sleep Number was the best sleep I had in 3years. In fact I didn’t get up once during the night while sleeping on the sleep number and my husband couldn’t believe that the sleep number could have made a difference on how I felt when I woke up. It does though but I am stuck with this Sealey and lousy sleep due to a terrible choice of mattresss on my part. I need a trade in on my still new pillow top Sealey

I have had Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue for 15 years (diagnosed) and 6 to 8 years ago I got a sleep number bed. The very first night there was a huge difference in my pain levels. I was actually able to sleep for a few hours. In the last 2 years I have developed pain in both shoulders and upper arms (sharp pain with pressure) and I have sleep apnea (had surgery). I am going 3 to 4 nights in a row with only 2 to 4 hours of sleep. I went into a store and when I was shown the bed that had the lift I immediately could feel the pressure off my shoulders and could lay on my back because having head elevated doesn’t close off airway.

WHY DOESN’T SELECT COMFORT FILL OUT FORMS FOR MEDICARE? As a customer I could pay cash for the bed and be reimbursed by Medicare with a doctor’s prescription for the bed. The medicare form would have to be signed by someone of authority for Select Comfort? Would your company consider this? I am on disability and can not spend the money unless I know I will get it back.

    Thanks for a reply!!!
