Every day, we hear stories about how the Sleep Number bed has improved our customers’ lives (check out our Facebook page for regular examples). And, once in a while, we hear a story that truly stands out. Joe S. from Bel Air, Maryland, is one of those stories.
Joe spoke during our holiday program held here in Minneapolis last month. Here’s a brief recap of his touching story.
Joe became a quadriplegic suddenly in October of 2009 and his family’s world was turned upside down. Joe was hospitalized for six months, and after returning home, went through rehabilitation at the Kennedy Krieger Institute for six hours a day, three days a week, for 12 weeks.
After his tiring rehabilitation sessions, Joe came home to the reality of an uncomfortable in-home hospital bed. After nine months of sleeping separate from his wife—and having his two young daughters afraid to sit with him in the hospital bed—Joe asked his physical therapists for their recommendation.
They recommended a Sleep Number bed. And, Joe calls it one of the smartest decisions he and his wife Monica ever made.
Joe described how the bed’s benefits help him control his blood pressure and reduce his leg swelling (Joe’s Sleep Number is a 65, by the way). And, the bed increased his quality of life, too. While in his hospital bed, Joe was separated from him family during their regular Friday movie nights. Well, not anymore. Now family movie night means the whole family is piled into one bed…together again. So, Joe no longer feels like an outsider.
Joe closed his remarks with these heartfelt words:
“From me and my girls to everyone here at the Sleep Number family, we thank you for everything you do and have done for us. From the guy in research and development, to the gal in marketing, to the folks on the floor, and everybody in between. It’s a team that makes your bedding system what it is today.”

I love our sleep number bed. I have spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease and it really helps the swelling and numbness in my lower legs. I have my bed at 60. I sleep a lot more sound.
