According to Consumer Reports, people hate the mattress-shopping experience and rate it only slightly less confusing than buying a car. When thinking about buying a mattress, words that come to the mind of consumers are dread, vulnerable, irreversible, distrust and misunderstood. And because of this, many people put off buying a new mattress… which is unfortunate because, according to the International Sleep Products Association, a new mattress can significantly improve overall comfort that leads to better sleep quality, relief from back pain and much more.
What makes mattress shopping so confusing? Tons of different technologies and materials (memory foam, innerspring, latex and air), lots of different brands and many, many mattress retailers! The result is consumers have endless options, but they don’t know or don’t remember how to hone in on the perfect mattress for them and their sleeping partner.
To make buying a mattress a bit easier for the millions of people who plan to purchase during the Labor Day time, Sleep Number sleep experts can offer assistance (and great deals on beds). Our mattress experts can help you assess some critical decisions like, “Do I really need a new mattress?” “What benefits will a new mattress provide?” “What questions should I ask when I’m in the store?” “How much do mattresses cost?” and “What firmness is best for my back?”

We bought two of these beds, one for our travel trailer and one for our home, and would not recommend them to anyone. Neither my husband nor I have had a good night’s sleep in them. They are nothing but glorified air mattresses.
Shopping for a mattress is certainly an occasion when the average consumer needs all the help he can get!
I think that mattress shopping is probably confusing for people because you only buy one every 5-10 years and in that time the whole mattress industry has moved on in technological leaps and bounds! What you thought you needed has been outdated and replaced with super high tech memory foam pocket spring hybrids!
Also I imagine most people don’t keep up to date with the latest mattresses in the same way they might do with a car or a computer even if the buying cycle is still about 5-10 years.
