Science Behind Dreaming

Dreams

Sleep Number BedWhat do you dream about? Can you even remember? Scientists tell us most people dream almost two hours each night during the REM (rapid-eye movement) stage of sleep.

According to the American Sleep Association, REM sleep, which occurs about every 90 minutes, stimulates the brain regions used in learning, and can affect the learning of certain mental processes.

Another study from the American Sleep Association found that people who were taught a skill, then deprived of REM sleep, had much more difficulty recalling what they learned than those who were NOT sleep-deprived.

Do you have pets? Dreaming doesn’t only affect humans. Most mammals and birds dream, however, reptiles and other cold-blooded animals do not. So if you see your dog “running” in his sleep, don’t be alarmed!

According to the National Sleep Foundation, dream image intensity can be related to emotional arousal, another clue to why we dream. However the interpretation of these dreams is still up to debate.

Dr. Sigmund Freud believed dreams gave us access to our unconsciously repressed conflicts. Psychoanalyst, Alfred Adler, believed dreams reflect our current lifestyle and offer solutions to contemporary problems.

We believe that to have good dreams, good sleep must come first. At Select Comfort, we are always looking for ways to improve your sleep and make your mornings as enjoyable as possible.

We also believe that as your quality of sleep improves, you may even remember a few of those good dreams.
